Vespers in Venice

Cynthia Miller Freivogel, violinist and leader
with guests Andrus Madsen (keyboards), Amanda Balestrieri (soprano), Marjorie Bunday (alto), Daniel Hutchings and Stephen Soph (tenors), and Michael Aiello (baritone)

In 17th-century Venice, the richest and most brilliant display of musical exuberance was reserved for Vespers. These services combined the best vocal music and the most flamboyant instrumental writing of the time. Our season begins with a splendid reconstruction of a Venetian Vespers from the 1630s, with music by Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni Rovetta, Carlo Fontana, and Dario Castello, plus keyboard improvisations in period style.

Handel at the Opera

Carla Moore, guest concertmaster
with Jennifer Lane (mezzo soprano), Randall Scotting (countertenor), and Tyler Duncan (baritone)

Italian opera was all the rage in 1720s London. George Frideric Handel enjoyed a fruitful career there as an opera composer, navigating the challenges of celebrity singers, rival companies, and a demanding public. Our concert celebrates Handel’s exceptional dramatic and melodic gifts with excerpts from seven operas, featuring three acclaimed Handel specialists as guest artists. Complementing the musical excerpts are behind-the-scenes stories from the London stage!

Virtuoso Vivaldi

Cynthia Miller Freivogel, violinist-leader and viola d’amore
with Daniel Zuluaga (mandolin and lute) and Matthew Dane (viola d’amore)

Exuberant, impetuous, fiery, spontaneous . . . the music of Antonio Vivaldi pulses with the colors of Venice and extroverted artistry. Often eccentric and over the top, his many concertos feature not just the violin but more unusual instruments in the soloist role. Our program invites you to a February feast of unexpected virtuosity, with concertos for the mandolin, lute, and viola d’amore, accompanied by strings and continuo.

Heart of the Baroque

Cynthia Miller Freivogel, violinist-leader and violin piccolo

Our spring season finale spotlights the orchestra in a program displaying the art and heart of Baroque. Our core string ensemble is joined by horns, oboes, flutes, and bassoon for two diversely innovative masterworks: J.S. Bach’s celebrated First Brandenburg with its daring combination of instruments, and Jean-Fery Rebel’s rarely performed Les Élémens, an extraordinary symphony imagining the creation of the world.
