BCOC Musicians to Appear at PACE Center

Musicians from the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado will present a program at the Parker Arts Culture and Events (PACE) Center on Thursday, February 16 at 7:30 pm.

Part of the new arts center’s classical music series, the concert will feature works by Telemann, Corelli, Marais, Leclair, Morel, and Fischer. Performing are Tamara Meredith (flute), Stacey Brady (violin), Ann Marie Morgan (viola da gamba), and Frank Nowell (harpsichord).

The program includes trio sonatas by Telemann and Leclair, plus a narrated presentation of a fascinating Baroque oddity: a musical depiction by the French composer Marin Marais of his own surgical operation! The performers will also talk informally about the music and their period instruments.

The PACE Center is located at 20000 Pikes Peak Avenue, located at the corner of Mainstreet and Pine Drive downtown Parker (80138). Tickets for this event, available only from the PACE Center, are $22/19/16. For more information or tickets, visit www.parkeronline.org or call 303-805-6800.

BCOC Collaborates with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir

On March 2, the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado will collaborate with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir for “Requiem for a King.” The concert will be presented Friday, March 2 at 7:30 pm (one performance only) in one of Denver’s finest venues: the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center, University of Denver.

Two exceptional ensembles join forces for an exquisite 17th-century setting by Jean Gilles of the timeless Requiem text, with additional works reflecting the splendor and refinement of the French Baroque. The concert will feature guest concertmaster Julie Andrijeski plus vocal soloists Evanne Browne (soprano), Marjorie Bunday (alto), Todd Teske (tenor), and Patrick Mason (baritone).

Tickets are available only from the Newman Center; call 303-871-7720 or visit Newman Center Tickets. Please note that BCOC season tickets will not be valid for this concert.

Support for “Requiem for a King” is provided by a generous grant from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.

An Introduction to Baroque Dance

Julie Andrijeski, our guest concertmaster for “Requiem for a King” and one of the nation’s leading practitioners of Baroque dance, will present an overview and demonstration on Wednesday, February 29 from 4 to 6 pm at the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus, 855 Lawrence Street, in Denver.

Co-sponsored by the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado and the Metropolitan State College Music Department, the event is free and open to the public. Julie will talk about the basics of Baroque dance, and will demonstrate and teach participants dance steps to recorded music. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out more about those Baroque dances — minuets, bourées, gavottes, and sarabandes — that our orchestra so often plays.

Successful Holiday Appeal

The Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado had its most successful holiday appeal to date, both in terms of funds raised and the number of donors participating. From the board of directors, acting executive director, and the musicians of BCOC, thank you to all who contributed gifts of all sizes to make our appeal so successful. Your generosity enables our orchestra to continue bringing to Colorado audiences the musical riches and spirit of improvisation of the 17th and 18th centuries.

BCOC Receives SCFD Funds

BCOC was one of 270 cultural organizations that received funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). The SCFD Board of Directors approved distribution of $5,563,795 for cultural organizations in seven Denver Metro Counties at their meeting on Thursday, September 22, 2011. County Commissioners or City Council members appoint citizen volunteers to a County Cultural Council to review grant requests for SCFD funds.

Greater Denver Metro area voters created the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District in 1988 to provide public financial support to scientific and cultural organizations. SCFD facilitates distribution of the voter-approved retail sales and usage tax funds to organizations that provide for the enlightenment and entertainment of the public through the production, exhibition, advancement or preservation of art, music, theater, dance, zoology, botany, natural history or cultural history.
