Matthew Treviño
Hailed as “ a bass of rare talent” (San Francisco Chronicle) possessing a ”mellifluous bass that is at once robust and gentle” (Opera Magazine), American bass Matthew Treviño is captivating audiences through his work in opera, theater, and the recording arts.
A Texas native and recent winner of the Austin Critic’s Table Award for Best Singer, Treviño enjoys an active career on stage and stars in numerous studio recordings of new works including The Canterville Ghost by Gordon Getty (Pentatone), The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Michael Nyman (Naxos), and Three Way by Robert Patterson (American Modern Recordings). This season will see him as Zuniga in Carmen with Hawaii Opera Theatre, as Caronte in L'Orfeo with Pacific Music Works, a return to Austin Chamber Music's festival singing a concert featuring the songs of Borodin, Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata in his return to Austin Opera, and the Boatman in Sunday in the Park with George with the Zack Theater.
Recent stage highlights include Raimondo in Lucia Di Lammermoore and Leporello in Don Giovanni with Opera Colorado, Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Zuniga in Carmen with Hawaii Opera theater, The Client in Three Way with the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Colline in La Bohème with the Colorado Symphony, Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Vancouver Opera, Hobson in Peter Grimes and Sparafucile in Rigoletto with the English National Opera, Timur in Turandot and Dr. P in The Man Who Mistook His Wife with Austin Opera, The King in Aida with Aspen Music Festival, The Ghost in The Canterville Ghost with Opera Leipzig, and the Messiah with St Louis Symphony. Highly regarded for his acting and in particular for his comedic Gilbert and Sullivan performances, Mr. Treviño has appeared as Dick Deadeye in H.M.S. Pinafore at Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Opera Carolina and the Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance at the Fresno Grand Opera and Nevada Opera.
Other appearances for Mr. Treviño have included Pistola (Falstaff) for Opera Cleveland, Nourabad (Les pêcheurs de perles) for Syracuse Opera, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) for San Antonio Opera, and Colline (La bohème) for Opera Carolina, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Fresno Grand Opera. He has performed the roles of Angelotti (Tosca), Ramfis (Aida), and Commendatore (Don Giovanni), and, under the auspices of the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, Simone (Gianni Schicchi), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte). Most recently he appeared as Timur (Turandot) at Austin Lyric Opera, the King (Aïda) for Arizona Opera, Baron Douphol (La traviata) at Nashville Opera, Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) with the Opera Theatre Company in Ireland and he made his role debut as Don Giovanni with Opera Naples.
Mr. Treviño is a former member of the world renowned Merola Opera Program in San Francisco and is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was a winner in the Loren L. Zachary Foundation Competition, Dallas Opera Competition, Fort Worth Opera’s McCammon Voice Competition, and the recipient of the Thomas Stewart Award for Vocal Excellence at Baylor University.
